Shaping the future of crisis leadership

The recent WADEM Disaster Medicine Summer School brought together an extraordinary cohort of global health security and emergency response professionals, sparking intense, high-level discussions on the frontlines of disaster management, counter-terrorism medicine, and emergency leadership.
Conceived and organised by WADEM’s Student and Young Professional Special Interest Group (SYP-SIG), Disaster Medicine Summer School brought subject matter experts, academics, and participants from more than 25 countries for three intensive and inspiring days exploring the breadth and depth of disaster and emergency medicine.
Throughout the program, dynamic conversations tackled some of the most pressing challenges in contemporary disaster response: managing complex high-threat environments, improving multi-agency interoperability, and navigating operational stresses unique to CBRN and mass-casualty incidents. Participants engaged directly with frontline case studies, examining both strategic policy frameworks and granular tactical realities.

A major highlight of the summer school was the interactive final panel session, where students had an open floor to direct critical, unvarnished questions to a distinguished panel of internationally recognised leaders like Frank Van Trimpont, Roberto Mugavero, Knut Ole Sundnes, George Tataru, Oleg Stotozhenko, Ernesto Pretto, Andres Ellexelius, and Ricardo Filipe Barreiros Mexia.
The Q&A exchange pushed beyond standard theoretical paradigms, addressing the raw realities of decision-making under uncertainty, institutional resilience, ethical dilemmas during resource scarcity, and the imperative for cross-border cooperation. Students challenged the panel on subjects ranging from adaptive field triage protocols to long-term psychological sustainability for first responders in complex counter-terrorism scenarios and gender-based violence.
A clear message of leadership
A central message resonated clearly throughout the final discussions:
"The very fact that you are sitting in this room means that you are not just preparing for the future—you are already leaders in your community."
The panellists emphasised that leadership in disaster medicine and counter-terrorism health security is not defined by title or tenure alone, but by years of proactive dedication, critical inquiry, and a commitment to operational excellence.
As Counter-Terrorism Medicine Europe continues to advocate for advanced preparedness and specialised training across the continent, events like the WADEM Summer School reaffirm that the future of disaster response is in capable, forward-thinking hands.
